The Connection of Temple and StateIn early Judaism, a king was chosen to rule over God's people, the Israelites. The first king was Saul, then David, Solomon, etc. The kings were chosen by God, who communicated with the kings themselves and through prophets, who would pass God's message onto the king. As Judaism grew and became more organized the power, held by the king, was shared with other priestly figures, such as the pharisees or sadducees. Each had a specific role in day to day lives and religious practices of the Israelites. Priests were seen as a bridge between the people and God and guardians of worship.
