Sacred TextsThe most important texts of ancient Judaism is known as the Torah, or the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch is also the first five books that are found in the Catholic Bible. Made up of the books of Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Numbers, and Leviticus. These books were written by Israelite scribes during the Babylonian Exile. The Jewish Bible, known as Tanakh, also contains the Prophets (Nevi'im), and the Writings (Ketuvim). The books of Prophets are historical accounts from the original settlement of the Israelites to the Babylonian Exile, and the accounts of prophets. The books of the Writings is a mix of poems, wisdom literature, and historical writings. All of the books of the Jewish Bible are still written and read in Hebrew. The Torah is separated into 54 different sections and read every Sabbath in the synagogue in a pattern. Other readings from the rest of the Jewish Bible are read on certain holidays and/or festivals/celebrations.
